Welcome to the site of the Addingham Civic Society. The Society, a registered charity, was formed in 1978, initially to fight landfill of the old railway cutting and for the best route for the village bypass, and has developed into a respected voice for the residents of Addingham and a sounding board for local opinion.

Aims of the Society

  • To stimulate public interest and involvement in actively protecting the quality of life enjoyed in Addingham.

We hold regular meetings at which members hear talks on subjects of local interest (such as the architecture and history of historic buildings, the work of local craftsmen, and the countryside around), as well as holding social events and fundraising coffee mornings. Among our members we have historians, architects and naturalists and we have published several books on the history of the village and on walks around the area . We make donations to local good causes and get our hands dirty by, for example, cleaning up the village and planting trees.

  • To promote high standards of planning and architecture and encourage preservation, conservation, development and improvement of features of public amenity, historic interest or environmental importance

The Society exists for the good of Addingham and its residents. It acts as a watchdog, keeping a watching brief on all planning applications and other proposals that might affect the character of the village . We are not against change - all communities must develop and evolve - but we will do our best to protect the historic environment that we live in and ensure that change is for the better. We work closely with the Parish Council, other Civic Societies and similar bodies in the wider area.

News Release 17/06/2008
'Addingham Civic Society Participates In First Civic Societies Week'
(for immediate release)

Addingham Civic Society is taking part in the first ever Civic Societies Week, with the aim of raising the profile of the civic society movement across the region and celebrating the important work that societies do in providing a community voice on development and regeneration matters.
Over 30 societies from across Yorkshire and Humber will be taking part in the week-long event (from Saturday 21st June through to Sunday 29th June) by hosting their own activities, putting on displays and events, and running campaigns.
Civic societies are independent, voluntary organisations made up of people who care passionately about their surroundings and who want to change them for the better. They actively promote high standards of planning, architecture, regeneration and sustainability.
Civic Societies Week is being masterminded by YHACS, the Yorkshire and Humber Association of Civic Societies, which was established in 1999 to support and promote the work of the region’s societies and represent them at regional level.
As part of the region-wide events planned for the week, Addingham Civic Society will be sending a special Newsletter to every house in the Addingham parish during the week outlining the results of their survey of members.

Mike Bolton from Addingham Civic Society said:
“We are delighted to be taking part in the event and help make the first ever Civic Societies Week a huge success. This has given us the ideal opportunity to tell the whole of Addingham about our activities and what our members are wanting from their Civic Society. We see this as a way of getting across our message that we care for our local environment and we look forward to bringing more like minded people into membership of the Society. We are not just a group of retired ‘do-gooders’ and we want to encourage young people to take part in our activities to make a real difference to where we live.”

Kevin Trickett, Project Manager for Civic Societies Week, said: “This is a perfect opportunity for civic societies within the region to showcase their work and activities to the wider community, and help drum up support. Hopefully, it will also see a boost to their membership numbers.”
Membership of a civic society is open to anyone who shares a concern for what is happening to the public realm.

Preliminary Report on the Membership Consultation 2008

Your committee wished to get a clearer picture of what is important to our members to help in developing a strategic plan for the Civic Society. As part of that process four key themes had already been identified which it was believed the Society should be developing:–
1. Conservation of what is of value in the village
2. Protection of what gives the village its character
3. Enhancement of the local environment
4. Communication with members and others
